I. Make space
It could be a corner of a room, a floor area—just once there is clutter free space. It does not have to be a lot of square footage. II. Control the atmosphere Candles Creating a dinner setting with candles can affect the ambience of a room tremendously. Similarly, using candles can also create a mood of intimacy and discovery in worship. Worship can be enhanced, too, when it involves our sense of smell. Scented candles can be used once the smell does not become distracting or overwhelming.
Incense For years incense has been used in PreChristian and Christian worship. God commanded the Israelites to place in the tabernacle “pure candlesticks,” and “sweet incense” (Exodus 31:8). God obviously paid attention to smells referring to the incense as “sweet”. The burning of incense indicated the presence of God (Leviticus 16:13) and it also symbolized the ascension of prayers (Psalm 141:2).
Music Music can be a powerful agent of change. It has the ability to change or control an atmosphere. It has the ability to draw us. Though the choice of music is personal, it should help to engage us into an act of worship. Chair, pillow or cushion Have a chair, pillow or cushion that is comfortable for sitting. III. Set the stage Sacred Objects Items, such as the Holy Bible, a cross, or a painting can add to the meaning of the space, serving to remind us of its purpose.
Plants Whether we go to nature-- such as at a beach, lake or mountain, or bring nature to us-- such as in the creation of an indoor garden, we can experience God’s life and sacredness thro ugh His creation. The Psalmist David says, “The earth [is] the LORD'S, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein” (Psalm 89:11).
Inspirational Ideas There is no right or wrong way in creating a sacred space. Quoting from Whetzell, the author of Living Clutter, Joni Strandquest states that “the more space you can see in a room—the calmer your mind becomes.” Stillness is a requirement in God’s presence which is not limited to simply the physical but also the mental. Building an altar in your sacred space with these items can be as simple as a space on a table or desk, or even a window ledge. An altar is a powerful symbol to remind us that we are called to live a life of sacrifice to God and in service to humanity.
