I finished my walk/jog slightly winded as I had attempted to sprint the last 50 yards at the prompting of my teenage daughter. This may seem a small task to some but for me it held much significance. In 2011 I was diagnosed with Stage IV aggressive breast cancer and was given a prognosis of 12-14 months to live. Since then, this journey is the absolute hardest thing on which I have embarked. It has been filled with many ups and downs, both physically and emotionally. However, my one Constant has been, and is God. Though I may stumble, He does not. His words of encouragement and hope are always present, pressing me to continue moving forward. From the time of my diagnosis until now, He has constantly reminded me of His promises: His will is always to heal; He sent His son for ME that I might, indeed, be healed. One of God’s earliest directives to me was to not become consumed with trying to heal myself of the cancer, but rather to take care of my body–my temple. He would take care of the rest. In addition, to nurturing continuously my spirit, I also nurture my body through proper diet and exercise. And today He reminded of what He meant in saying “I will take care of the rest.”
When I was done exercising, I checked my text messages. A friend had sent a music video offering encouragement for this oft-difficult journey. I heard the words “moving forward” in my spirit and decided to look through my previously written notes for anything I had written on this particular topic. I found this excerpt from an email I sent a dear friend many years ago:
So as my teenage daughter encouraged me today, and as God encourages me every day, I want to encourage you to keep moving forward. No matter what the obstacles, no matter what roadblocks you face, keep moving forward. You’ll find that even though slightly winded, you will finish the race.
